A Posting with a Purpose!

This is my first blog posting (aside from my announcement of being new)! I decided to make a blog as a way to express myself. I am an English major and love writing, so a blog seems like the right direction to head. However, the path drawn out for this new use of expression is unclear because I'm not quite sure what kind of blog to pursue. So far, I plan to write down my thoughts, ideas, daily events in my life, and critiques. Who knows though, this blog could turn into a theme of travel, food, clothes, books...and so on. I may try a little of each. The possibilities are endless, but my time right now is not. It is getting late and I have an early class!!

I thought for my first entry I would explain my blog title:

I love mornings! Granted, I am not a morning person, but on the rare occasion that I wake up early, I get great joy out of the serenity that a morning brings. It is a wonderful feeling to be the first one awake in your home and rise with the sun as well as the chirping birds. I like to make a large pot of coffee and have a healthy breakfast. I believe breakfast is the best meal of the day! It includes all my favorite foods: cereal, toast, eggs, and fruit. I generally further my relaxation by drinking coffee while reading a newspaper or book. Pure bliss! I get to experience a morning such as this a few days a week. The other days are spent rushing out of bed after sleeping through my alarm. Running out the door with no breakfast, wearing God knows what in order to make it to my classes on time. That same sun shines brightly in my naked, sun-glassless eyes, and in reality, the chirping birds sound like tone deaf geese fighting over a cheese-It.  So as you can tell, when I get to experience a good morning, I am overjoyed when I compare it to the alternative.

My blog title expresses my love for peaceful mornings and my favorite meal of the day. Most importantly, "As Freedom is a Breakfastfood" is also the title of a poem by Edward Estlin Cummings. Unfortunately, aside from the mention of the word, it has nothing actually to do with "breakfast!" This is permissible and I will move on from this minor set back. Since I am an English major, I have read my fare share of literature and poetry. I love to read anything and everything! This poem in particular captured my attention and I am very fond of it as well as it's writer, E.E. Cummings. I am posting it below so any reader who wishes to do so may read it! I am tempted to analyze this poem and all of its literary devices, but I think that would only be entertaining to myself and other book worms. I'll spare you that for now. Unless anyone in particular wishes to have literary discussion...I am always up for that! Until then, please enjoy this poem and draw your own analysis and meaning. It's always interesting to see how poetry speaks to the individual.

"As Freedom is a Breakfastfood"

as freedom is a breakfastfood

or truth can live with right and wrong

or molehills are from mountains made

-long enough and just so long

will being pay the rent of seem

and genius please the talentgang

and water most encourage flame

as hatracks into peachtrees grow

or hopes dance best on bald men's hair

and every finger is a toe

and any courage is a fear

-long enough and just so long

will the impure think all things pure

and hornets wail by children stung

or as the seeing are the blind

and robins never welcome spring

nor flatfolk prove their world is round
nor dingsters die at break of dong

and common's rare and millstones float
-long enough and just so long

tomorrow will not be too late

worms are the words but joy's the voice

down shall go which and up come who

breasts will be breasts and thighs will be thighs

deeds cannot dream what dreams can do

-time is a tree (this life one leaf)

but love is the sky and i am for you
just so long and long enough

-E.E. Cummings

Newbie

Hello! This is my first blog posting which makes me a newbie!

Just in case there is any question to what a newbie is, Urban Dictionary has the answer in the form of entertaining definitions and examples:

Not to be confused by noob, a newbie is a newcomer to anything. Newbies can spell, but they lack in what's new to them. Noobs and newbies are kinda opposites, in a way. Plus, newbies are usually more respectful than noobs.
Newbie: Um, excuse me, TehPro...?

TehPro: Yes?

Newbie: Do you know how to move in this game?

TehPro: Yes, the W, A, S, D keys.

Newbie: Thank you.
TehPro: No problem.

I hope this clarifies the fact that I am new to blogging. For your own benefit, please make this your Vocabulary Word of the Day! Your "cool points" will go up in scale as well as your popularity with the young and hip crowd.

Have fun and enjoy!
